The Department of Performance Studies lives at the sprawling intersection of personal narrative, literature, culture, technology, and performance theory. Our PhD supervisors are specialists in music history from the Middle Ages to the present, global music history, opera studies, theory and analysis, music and gender, music and heritage studies, arts and cultural management, music technology (including Web Science and artificial intelligence), and ethnomusicology. Jo’s PhD involves an investigation of live intermediality in performance. The Graduate Group in Performance Studies is responsible for the Ph.D. program and is comprised of faculty with appointments in the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies as well as faculty from a range of departments and disciplines with scholarly and teaching interests in the field.
In performance studies, we use performance as a means to critically engage with identity, technology, social structures, and everyday life. We teach students how to create original performance works, use performance as a framework for analysis, and mobilize it in the service of community engagement and social justice.
